California Proposition 65

We care about our customers' safety and hope that the information below is helpful when choosing products for you and your family.

WHAT IS PROP 65?

California's Proposition 65 is a state-specific regulation that entitles California consumers to special warnings if a product contains substances known to the state of California to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity when consumed in amounts above certain thresholds. “Prop 65” was designed to provide consumers with information so that they can make informed choices about their health and be more aware of their total exposure to chemicals in their diets and environment. Sometimes, you will see a Prop 65 warning on a product label like ours. Prop 65 warnings are seen throughout California in a wide range of settings -- in restaurants, grocery stores, hotels, schools, hospitals, and theme parks.

PROP 65 WARNING FOR PRODUCTS LINKED TO THIS PAGE

Certain Wise Woman Herbals products containing naturally-occurring lead have the following warning on their labels: WARNING: This product contains lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer or reproductive harm. These products have been found to have lead content of at least .05 micrograms in a recommended daily serving of the product.

WHAT DOES THIS WARNING MEAN?

This warning notifies consumers that the product contains naturally-occurring lead above the minimum thresholds specified by the State of California. Lead is a naturally occurring metal found in soil, water, plants and other food products. All of our natural plant ingredients are grown in soil and absorb lead from the soil they are grown in. Our testing has shown that concentrations of naturally-occurring lead can sometimes exceed California thresholds in certain Wise Woman Herbals product types: Encapsulations, Solid Extracts, and Teas.

WHY AM I SEEING THIS WARNING IF I DON’T LIVE IN CALIFORNIA?

Prop 65 standards are among the most stringent standards in place anywhere, and are often far more stringent than federal standards. These warnings are required under California law, and apply to any product that may make its way into California. Since we are unable to control how many of our products are distributed or shipped to California, we have chosen to add Prop 65 warnings to all relevant products.

WHAT KINDS OF SUBSTANCES REQUIRE PROP 65 WARNINGS?

Over 800 substances are listed under California Prop 65. They include heavy metals, and even Vitamin A at certain levels. Certain listed substances, such as lead, occur naturally in the environment - in air, soil, water, and rocks. As a result, certain Prop 65-listed chemicals are often found in commonly eaten foods grown in soil, and throughout the food supply generally, even though these chemicals are not intentionally added to foods or nutritional supplements.

HOW CAN I USE PROP 65 INFORMATION TO MAKE HEALTHY CHOICES?

We believe that all consumers should always be aware of all product warnings. Prop 65 warnings can be useful in helping consumers develop a holistic view of their total exposure to the covered chemicals. This may be particularly important for consumers who are sensitive to those chemicals. A Prop 65 warning does not automatically mean that a product is unsafe. Prop 65 standards for warnings are often very stringent. For example, for reproductive toxins, the level for warnings is 1000 times lower than the “no observed effect level” at which animal studies reported no reproductive health effect.

WHY DON’T SIMILAR PRODUCTS FROM OTHER BRANDS CARRY THE SAME WARNING?

There are a variety of reasons. Some larger manufacturers are able to label products only for California consumers, and ship products without Prop 65 labels to consumers elsewhere. Other companies may elect not to provide warnings because they believe that they are not required to do so under Prop 65 standards. A lack of warnings for a product does not necessarily mean that the products is free of the same substances at similar levels. If you want more information about the contents of a product you are considering, it’s always a good idea to ask the manufacturer.
