Methods of Maintaining a Healthy Digestive System

Having a healthy digestive system is essential to maintaining overall well being and happiness. The saying you are what you eat isn't myth, it's absolutely true. We all know our bodies operate from our food and water intake so it's important that these fuels are processed and properly distributed for maximum efficiency. When problems arise in the digestive system it can make refueling a very daunting task.

The first step to a healthy gut is having the right balance of bacteria which can be obtained from increasing the amount of fiber, prebiotic-rich food and probiotics. My favorites prebiotic-rich foods are bananas, onions, garlic and spinach. I find that I can add these ingredients into my smoothies and other meals while also adding flavor. Probiotics are often found in fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi and tempeh but I usually opt for probiotic supplements, greek yogurt, and kombucha.

Another method I use for keeping my digestive track clean is drinking celery juice. Although many of the health benefits of this fad have not been fully studied, it is proven to be a diuretic and loaded with essential vitamins and minerals. This increases my body's awareness to hydrate more which can often go unnoticed due to a busy schedule and large amounts of caffeine consumption. Celery is also known to have sodium clusters salts that help flush out toxins and destroy pathogens which can disrupt gut health. Although, I do not recommend this for anyone with high cholesterol as it can easily outweigh the benefits associated with it.
